David FitzRandolph

East Jersey Olde Towne is located on River Road in in Johnson Park, which is in Piscataway, New Jersey. Eleven homes, some of which are original historical homes that were transported here to avoid demolition, and a few of which are reproductions, are located here and are being restored. The FitzRandolph home, being developed as a storyteller's cabin, is believed to have been built by David FitzRandolph in 1743. Although it is known David was a descendent of Edward FitzRandolph and Elizabeth Blossom, little else is known about him. He was a Freeholder in 1749 and held a number of government positions, including Overseer of Roads. The house remained in the family until 1848. Olde Towne has a brochure that contains more information about the home's history. At one time, the house had a large second story added on by later owners, but the house on display is the original size, as built by David. The brochure describes it as typical of the small (and it is very small) farmhouses built in early Piscataway along the Raritan River. The original roof was probably wood shingles.
